최근 청와대가 문재인 대통령이 한 외교안보매체로부터 '올해의 균형자(The balancing act award)'로 선정됐다고 발표한 것을 두고 '풍자성 칼럼을 오역(誤譯)했다'는 지적이 제기된 가운데 해당 칼럼을 쓴 기자가 '청와대 해석이 맞다'고 31일 답했다.
청와대는 앞서 지난 28일 "더디플로맷 기사는 풍자적 요소를 담고 있다"면서도 "다만 우리나라에 대해서는 상황을 냉정하게 전달하면서 '균형자 상'이라고 표현하고 있어 소개했다"고 해명한 바 있다.
'오역 논란'의 발단은 지난 27일 청와대 페이스북 방송이었다. 고민정 청와대 부대변인은 이날 '11시 50분 청와대입니다'에서 "종종 소개한 외교전문매체 '더디플로맷'을 잘 아실 것"이라며 "이 매체가 올해 아시아 정치 지도자를 종합적으로 평가하며 문재인 대통령을 올해의 균형자로 선정했다"고 전했다. 그러면서 "문 대통령은 미국과 중국 사이에서 정치적 균형을 잡았다는 평가를 받았다"고 덧붙였다.
그러나 방송이 나간 뒤 청와대가 기사를 오역했다는 주장이 제기됐다. 풍자적 성격을 지닌 기사로 청와대가 이를 인용한 것이 적절하지 않았다는 것이다.
실제 '정유년 아시아의 승자와 패자'라는 제목의 기사에는 아웅산 수치 미얀마 국가자문역을 '지킬 앤 하이드 상' 수상자로, 로드리고 두테르테 필리핀 대통령은 '먼저 쏘고 질문은 나중에 상' 수상자로 선정하는 등 풍자적 요소가 담겨 있다. 같은 맥락에서 미국과 중국 사이에서 이러지도 저러지도 못하는 한국의 처지를 비꼬아 문 대통령을 '올해의 균형자'로 선정했다는 주장이다.
아울러 더디플로맷의 사무실이 일본에 있다며 '미국 외교전문매체'라는 청와대 설명이 맞느냐는 지적도 나왔다.
이와 관련해 해당 기사를 쓴 더디플로맷의 앤서니 펜솜은 '청와대의 해석에 동의하느냐'는 파이낸셜뉴스의 이메일 질문에 "청와대의 설명에 동의한다"고 답했다.
그는 "전반적으로 살짝 풍자적인 관점에서 기사를 썼지만 올해 아시아의 정치적 승자와 패자에 대해 요약하는 내용을 담고 있다"면서 "이 점에 있어서 한국과 관련한 내용은 쓰여진 대로 해석돼야 한다"고 덧붙였다.
다만 더디플로맷을 미국 매체로 소개하는 것은 맞지 않다고 설명했다. 펜솜은 "더디플로맷은 미국 워싱턴DC와 일본 도쿄에 사무실을 두고 아시아·태평양 지역을 다루는 온라인 매거진"이라며 "이런 의미에서 더디플로맷을 '미국 매체'로 묘사하는 것은 정확하지 않다"고 밝혔다.

1) Yes, I agree with the Blue House comments. The article overall is written from a slightly satirical perspective, however it is still meant to present a brief summary of the political winners and losers in Asia this year. In this regard, my comments re South Korea should be interpreted as they are written.
2) Regarding The Diplomat, it is an online magazine covering the Asia-Pacific region, with offices in Tokyo and Washington. In this sense it is incorrect to describe it as "US media".
